The Mistral is a very strong wind that often blows in South France. It blows from north-northwest down the Rhône Valley and gets stronger on its way to the Mediterranean coast. Its intensity is dependent on the pressure difference: if there is a pressure difference exceeding 5hPa between Lyon and Marseille, one has to face strong winds, particularly in Provence and Camargue. The forecast is based on model output statistics (MOS) by Deutscher Wetterdienst and is updated several times a day.
